Vita Sapien themes in movies

Vita Sapien is a new philosophy to help humanity survive the 21st Century.

We communicate through little pocketbooks like Vita Worldview.

We also communicate by identifying movies that have Vita Sapien themes.

Read the little book - it takes about 30 minutes - and then watch some movies with Vita Sapien themes to get a deeper understanding of Vita Sapien and what we need to know and believe to survive.

Many feature films have Vita Sapien themes because they cover consciousness, spirituality, humanness, the Sixth Extinction, and the spiritual connection to nature. Some of these movies include:

- Avatar

- Ex-Machina

- Blade Runner

- The Day the Earth Stood Still

- Geostorm

- Alien Romulus

See below how these movies help communicate Vita Sapien themes.

    Avatar movie is powerful eco-spirituality

James Cameron's movie Avatar is a powerful story to help connect people spiritually to nature.

On the Moon Pandora, a vast forest is inhabited by a indigenous race called Na'Vi. These eleven-foot high, blue-skinned hominids have a civilization that is embedded within the natural ecosystem, much like the indigenous cultures on Earth. Unfortunately for the Na'Vi, Moon Pandora is rich in a mineral called Unobtanium, and the rapacious, murderous humans have set up a mining facility that bulldozes everything and everyone in their path.

A scientific program - the Avatar Program - uses a technology that allows humans to experience life through a Na'Vi replica called an avatar.

When one of the avatar 'drivers' dies, he is replaced by this genetic twin brother - Jake Sully - a crippled marine soldier. Jake Sully is pressured by Pandora mining operation's head of security to use access to the Avatar program to gather intelligence to help pressure the Na'Vi into compliance. When inside his avatar body, Sully find the use of his legs again, and meets Neytiri who helps him understand that what the humans are doing on Pandora is wrong.

      Avatar eco-spirituality in academic literature

James Cameron's movie Avatar has generated a lot of interest in academic circles for how it portrays ecological spirituality. Notable amongst this academic literature is Bron Taylor's book Avatar and Nature Spirituality.

      Blade Runner and Ecological Spirituality

The Blade Runner movie is based on a novella by Philip K. Dick: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world where most animals have gone extinct. Tyrell Corporation has pioneered the development of replicants - manufactured humans perfect designed to be used off-world. Replicants are identical to humans except that they have artificial memories, no spiritual capacity, and a six year life-span. An advanced model of replicant called Nexus 6 develop 'emotional response' - fear, love, envy, hate - and a group of them seek out Tyrell Corp to extend their limited life-span. Deckard is a Blade Runner, a police officer whose job is to kill replicants that get out of line.

Vita Sapien believes that there is much to be learned about spirituality and ecological spirituality from these movies. A key them is the inquiry into what it is to be a human being. Can a replicant experience spirituality? Another core theme is a planet devoid of animals.

Blade Runner movie was followed by Blade Runner 2049.

The Day the Earth Stood Still

Two movies titled The Day the Earth Stood Still were inspired by a 1940 short story by Harry Bates called Farewell to the Master.

This page considers the second movie.

In the story, spaceman Klatuu comes to Earth in a spaceship accompanied by his robot assistant Gort. Klatuu seeks to communicate to the UN General assembly an important message but is arrested by the military. He escapes and with the help of friendly rescuers he tells his story to a professor.

Klatuu's race has observed human behavior and the destruction of the planet's biosphere. They send Klatuu and Gort to seek humans to change their ways. Failing that, they retrieve important species from Earth annihilate the humans from Earth, and then return the important species.

The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008)

"You came to save the world from us..."

It's only on the brink that people find the will to change.

          It's not your planet.
